This helps a parent determine how much room is between the tips of the childs toes to the end of the shoe. If a childs toes do not reach the end of the foot, you know that the shoe is too big. If the toe is jammed up against the end of the foot, then you know that the shoe is too small. You will want a little room near the toe so the foot is not uncomfortable in the shoe.

The trick is to find a shoe that fits a little snug, but not too tight. Also, it is recommended since children grow so fast that you leave about an eighth of an inch from the childs toe to the end of the shoe for growth. You want your childs feet to be properly supported to prevent or correct pronation, flat feet, or any other foot problems that a child either is born with or acquires by habit.
